Leaf-peepers, gird your loins: Fall colors are creeping into central Iowa.
The intrigue: We're expected to hit peak fall colors in central Iowa around the end of this week.
- And the trees that have already turned have good color, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. (Thanks, rain?)
Zoom in: Around Des Moines, cottonwoods, walnuts and elms are yellow, while some maples are turning red, orange and yellow.
- Roadside sumac and Virginia creeper are maroon.
Pro tip: Can't wait? Head to northeast Iowa spots like Decorah for an early start to our full foliage.
What's next: The final days of Iowa's peak foliage are estimated to land around the end of October in southern Iowa.
- Explore the Iowa DNR's color reports to get the most up-to-date information on leaf colors statewide.
