Iowa importers have paid an estimated $1.7 billion in tariffs imposed by President Trump from January 2025 through June of this year.
Why it matters: The tariff bill is directly hitting Iowa businesses, especially manufacturers that rely on imported inputs.
By the numbers: Iowa's estimated tariff tab through June was equivalent to $1,276 per household, according to an Axios analysis of data from Trade Partnership Worldwide and the National Taxpayers Union Foundation.
- About 84% of Iowa's estimated tariffs were on raw materials, parts and equipment used by manufacturers, according to the Iowa tariff tracker.
- Steel, aluminum and other metals led the way at $286 million, followed by agricultural and construction equipment at $221 million.
State of play: The Supreme Court struck down Trump's sweeping emergency-power tariffs in February, meaning some of the money could ultimately be refunded to importers.
- The administration has since turned to other trade laws to impose narrower replacement tariffs.
