Jason here: Highland Underground officially opens today, but I got an early look over the weekend at this nostalgic new cocktail lounge tucked in the basement of the former Klein's Department Store.
The vibe: The space oozes midcentury charm with dim lighting and 1970s-era furniture.
- Several tables feature landline phones that connect you to other guests around the room — perfect for striking up an impromptu chat.
On the menu: There are a dozen cocktails, many with a twist like the Far Out Fresh margarita with Thai chile peppers.
On my plate: I tried the cheese fondue for two ($24), which included hearty bites of bread, sausage, broccoli, cherry tomatoes and several kinds of peppers.
- I also had a Chuck's Mule ($10), made with Cedar Ridge vodka.
My thought bubble: Highland Park has changed drastically in the last five years, transforming into one of Des Moines' most eclectic hangout zones.
- Highland Underground fits right in — a fun, stylish spot just steps from Lachele's Fine Foods and Cha Cha's Bakery.
Dig in: Wednesdays and Thursdays, 3-10pm; Friday, 3-midnight; Saturday, noon to midnight; and Sunday, noon to 10pm.
