After 30 years, Sherman Hill has a neighborhood park again

Catch up quick: The neighborhood lost its park in 1995 when the city relocated Chamberlain Park from 19th Street and Ingersoll Avenue to 22nd Street and Woodland Avenue.

• Although Chamberlain is near Sherman Hill, neighborhood officials have long wanted a park to enhance access for residents.

Zoom in: The Sherman Hill Association raised about $125,000 last year through private donations and received a $50,000 Polk County grant to create the playground in the undeveloped section of yard at the Mickle Center, located at 16th and Pleasant Streets.

• It includes multiple climbing structures, a birds nest swing and a spinner plate.

State of play: The neighborhood will dedicate the project later this month as Myers Park in honor of the philanthropists behind the Myers Family Fund.

• Larry Myers was the past president of the Iowa Jewish Home, which was previously located at the Mickle Center.

The intrigue: Myers is open to the public, but it's not part of the city's 77-park system.

• The neighborhood association and the Mickle Center will maintain it.
