City OKs four-story parking garage for court annex redevelopment

A new four-story parking garage will be constructed in downtown as part of $36.3 million redevelopment of the historic federal courthouse annex.
Why it matters: The garage will replace a surface parking lot, advancing Des Moines' long-term goal to redevelop underused downtown space.
Driving the news: City Council approved a development agreement last month with Riverview Parking that included an estimated $10 million in incentives over the next 20 years.
- The nearly $14 million garage will be constructed east of the annex, along the 200 block of E. Court Avenue and include at least 335 parking spaces.
Flashback: The annex had contained the U.S. attorney and U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Iowa, but recently moved as part of a federal courthouse project.
- Riverview DSM now owns the building and plans to develop it into restaurant and office space.
What's next: Garage construction is expected to begin in the coming weeks and take about a year to complete.
