Jason's eats: The two tamales plate ($15). I chose jalapeno cheese. The masa coating melts in your mouth like butter and the jalapeno added some kick. Photo: Jason Clayworth/Axios
Jason here! A few months ago, I noticed Hot Tamale Catering had relocated its sit-down restaurant to inside the Cash Saver grocery store along Fleur Drive.
Why it matters: The new spot is easily overlooked and β if you're like me β you've been missing out!
State of play: It's one of the few places in the metro to buy handmade masa tamales β a corn dough that owner Angie Davila and her family make daily.
Catch up quick:Davila started the company out of her home about six years ago after losing her job as a medical underwriter.
She opened a restaurant on Southeast 14th Street in 2021 and moved it to the grocery site after its lease expired about a year ago.
On the menu: Outside of chicken, beef or jalapeno cheese tamales, Hot Tamale also serves carnitas tacos, giant quesadillas and chimichanga platters.
Breakfast burritos, pancakes and biscuits & gravy are also available.
Friction point: The new spot is inside the store's former deli seating area, which is easily overlooked from Fleur.
It has no outside entrance or a sign on the store's main marquee.
I visited around 6pm on a recent Saturday night and was the only table seated.
π Thought bubble: This prompted me to start an "overlooked" list.
Hit reply β I'm curious about what easily missed local eats are on your list!
