Polk County's first rooftop solar project goes online

Polk County's first government building rooftop solar field is now operating and another will be completed in about a week.
Why it matters: The county estimates the projects will save taxpayers $5.1 million in energy bills over the next three decades.
Catch up quick: Supervisors approved the fields for three buildings' rooftops under a $2.1 million contract in July.
- They are part of the county's 2040 goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from its operations by 90%.
State of play: North Side Community Center's solar project was completed this month, while one at Polk County's administration building downtown will be done by Dec. 3, Scott Ourth, director of general services for Polk County, tells Axios.
- Solar installation at River Place offices will begin next month with completion depending mainly on the weather, he said.
What's next: The county also plans to transition to an EV-based fleet and upgrade building efficiency in the next few years.
