U.S. Rep. Zach Nunn is defending his seat against Democrat Lanon Baccam for Iowa's 3rd District, which encompasses the central-southern part of the state.
Why it matters: The competitive 3rd District race includes the majority of the Des Moines metro area and is one of a few toss-up U.S. House races this year.
- Spending across both sides has surpassed $20 million, according to political ad tracker AdImpact.
Zoom in: Nunn, a United States Air Force officer, narrowly won his seat by just over 2,000 votes in 2022, unseating former U.S. Rep. Cindy Axne by less than a percentage point.
- Back in 2018, Nunn supported a "fetal heartbeat" bill at the Iowa Legislature that bans abortions at six weeks. He later said that he supports exceptions in the cases of incest, rape and saving the life of the mother.
- He says he wants to address inflation by reducing taxes and government spending, the Register reports.
Meanwhile, Baccam formerly served in the U.S. Department of Agriculture under former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack and worked on Joe Biden's 2020 Iowa campaign staff.
- He has heavily campaigned for abortion rights and says he would vote to restore Roe v. Wade.
- He has also promised to address rising interest rates by bringing costs down and holding corporations responsible for price gouging, as well as lowering prescription costs, the Register reports.
