Jolly Holiday Lights moves to Iowa State Fair, goes private

A private company is taking over Jolly Holiday Lights after Make-A-Wish Iowa opted to stop hosting the annual winter event.

Why it matters: For decades, the cherished Des Moines tradition was a major fundraiser for Make-A-Wish Iowa, which grants wishes for critically ill children.

But the event struggled to find its footing after its venue, Adventureland, decided not to host it anymore — turning the light show last year from a drive-thru into a walking event at the Outlets of Des Moines.

Driving the news: Winterland, Inc., an Indiana-based holiday lighting company, took over the show after learning about Make-A-Wish Iowa's withdrawal, Madelyn Graham, a spokesperson for the company, tells Axios.

They've helped with Jolly Holiday Lights installations for the last decade, making it a "natural fit," Graham says.

Details: The event will return to a drive-thru format at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, and a $1 donation will be made to Make-A-Wish Iowa for every vehicle.

If you go: Jolly Holiday Lights will run Nov. 29 to Jan. 4; 5:30-9pm on weekdays and 5:30-10pm on weekends.

Admission is $20 per car and $50 per bus or limo.
