Linh here. I recently came back from a trip to Texas and the best part was the consistently convenient Mexican food.

  • So I was pleasantly surprised when I was grabbing coffee at Mahalo's in West Des Moines and noticed La Tapatia opened a new bodega next door, "Mini Tapatia."

State of play: The store was opened last month by the owners of La Tapatia 2 along Merle Hay Road.

What you'll find: A small selection of fresh produce, meat, oils, seasonings, snacks, dairy products and packaged foods.

  • The big highlights are the local options, like fresh tortillas from Tortillería Luna and chicken tamales (three for $6).

The bottom line: I grew up in the area and the only nearby grocery options were Dahl's (RIP) and Hy-Vee.

  • This is a great, fresh option where people can try something new or grab groceries.

If you go: 4800 Mills Civic Pkwy., West Des Moines; 8am-8pm everyday
