The owner of the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche ranks as the largest sports empire in the world, a new CNBC report shows.

By the numbers: Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, led by Stan Kroenke, is valued at $21.2 billion and includes the NFL's Los Angeles Rams and Premier League's Arsenal, in addition to the Colorado teams.

The intrigue: The Kroenke family is not the only sports tycoon in Colorado.

AEG Worldwide, owned by billionaire Philip Anschutz, ranked sixth on CNBC's list of most valuable sports ownership groups at $12 billion.
The company owns ticketing service AXS as well as the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, MLS' LA Galaxy, Crypto.com Arena and a share of T-Mobile Arena.

Zoom out: Colorado-based Liberty Media, which didn't make the list, owns the controlling interest in Formula 1 racing.

The company bought the racing circuit in early 2017 for $4.4 billion. It also owns motorcycle racing group MotoGP.
