The Ohio State Fair returns this week with a nod to the past and an eye on the future.
Why it matters: The fair is one of Central Ohio's biggest events, drawing around a million visitors annually.
- This year's edition doubles as a celebration of America's 250th birthday and the unveiling of a $460 million fairgrounds renovation years in the making.
What's new:
🏗️ Two buildings: The Ohio Agriculture Center, with a Taste of Ohio Cafe and opportunities to shop local.
- The Ohio Showcase Building, housing a food hall and history exhibit — and the site of Wednesday's opening festivities.
🐄 Udder comfort: The building with the famous butter cow is now air-conditioned.
🎠 Carousel: A centerpiece attraction featuring fair animals and Ohio critters.
💨 Town Square: A central gathering space with an amphitheater, children's activities and a misting area inspired by Ohio glacial drifts.
🦋 Natural Resources Park: Explore a new butterfly house and aviary.
🎂 Outrageous foods: The Ohio Poultry Association recently added a 250th birthday cake deviled egg to an already-absurd lineup.
🎶 Performers: Blippi, Blues Traveler and Gin Blossoms make their debuts.
⌛ Time capsules: America-250 Ohio will open one from 1976 and bury one to be opened in 2076.
👷 Ohio Village: The nearby Ohio History Center attraction is still in the midst of a major renovation, but a fair ticket grants a free sneak peek at what's happening.
What's next: This year's butter cow will be unveiled Tuesday. Given last year's construction theme, we're predicting something for America 250.
