👋 Alissa here. Longtime readers likely know I'm an avid recycler, but composting has admittedly always been my sustainability sticking point.
Context: I've got a weak stomach. Just a whiff of a mildly unpleasant odor makes me gag, so the thought of saving rotting food scraps was always off-putting.
Yes, but: I got some tips at a Franklin Park Conservatory sustainability fair that made me realize I can compost without a food bucket or backyard pile.
How it works: NineCity of Columbus food scrap drop-off sites are making the practice more approachable than ever for newbies and the nose sensitive.
The 24/7 sites accept most kinds of food — including meat and dairy — as well as compost-friendly zipper bags, cutlery and paper products like napkins.
What's next: I'm going to keep my scraps inside a freezer bag until I drop them off, so the smelly decomposition process doesn't start until they're far away from my premises.
🫡 I'll try it for a couple weeks and report back about how it goes.
📬 I'm curious: Have any composting tips? Reply to this email and share your advice.
