Land-Grant Brewing's latest outdoor game is a fun twist on putt-putt … but only if it's cold.
The vibe: The Franklinton brewery's legendary outdoor space expanded in 2024 by adding "The Extension" across Chapel Alley, a new space for activities like pickleball.
- This year, as part of its Wintergarden, Land Grant is using the space for its newest game: "Puck-Putt."
What to expect: The game is what it sounds like — putt-putt, but with a hockey stick and puck, played on ice.
- The only problem? The ice is outdoors.
If you go: Make sure it's cold out.
I tried Puck-Putting this week on a balmy 48-degree night, which turned out to be an issue.
- The "ice" was essentially a pond, with pucks floating along the course and splashing to a stop, rather than sliding.
- The potential fun is easy to see — the few frozen "holes" were a good time, and a nice break from soaked shoes.
Yes, but: Soggy Puck-Putt is a rare miss from Land-Grant.
- I've had a lot of fun playing keg curling and other games at the brewery, and its efforts to create experiences beyond just "sit and drink" should be an inspiration to others.
The bottom line: It just debuted this week, so I'm sure it'll figure out how to make it work.
