Lionel Messi's Inter Miami returning to Columbus in 2026

Soccer fans will be able to see the sport's biggest star back in Columbus next year.

Why it matters: Since his arrival in MLS, the legendary Lionel Messi has been a massive draw — but his 2025 Columbus appearance was moved out of town.

Driving the news: MLS recently released its 2026 schedule, and the Crew will host Inter Miami at their soon-to-be-renamed home stadium.

Flashback: Before the 2025 season, the Crew announced the matchup with Inter Miami would be moved about 130 miles away to Huntington Bank Field, the home of the NFL's Browns, to capitalize on its massive capacity.

Crew owners Haslam Sports Group also own the Browns.

Friction point: An understandably nervous Columbus fanbase bristles at any out-of-town activities, and fans were furious.

The Nordecke supporters group told Axios that fans had "a clear and obvious lack of interest" in traveling to Cleveland for the match.

Yes, but: Messi played, and the Crew nearly doubled its all-time attendance record, drawing more than 60,000 fans.

Context: Messi did play in front of a sellout Columbus crowd in a 3-2 Miami win in 2024.
