The Columbus Fury return for a 2nd season

Columbus' newest sports team, the Fury, is back in action this weekend to start its second season.

Why it matters: The Fury is the city's only major professional women's sports team and returns after its inaugural season drew nearly 10,000 fans to Nationwide Arena at its peak.

State of play: The team kicks off its Pro Volleyball Federation season against the San Diego Mojo at 7:30pm Saturday.

It's the first of a 28-match schedule running through early May before the league's playoffs begin.

Flashback: While Columbus built a sizable fanbase in its debut season, the team's on-court performance landed them in fifth place out of seven teams.

An 8-16 record wasn't good enough to make the playoffs, but head coach Ángel Pérez is back for another season at the helm.

The intrigue: Returning players like Megan Courtney-Lush and Tori Stringer are joined by new hitters Jill Gillen — one of the league's highest point-scorers last season — and Morgan Lewis.

What we're watching: Courtney-Lush of Kettering is among five Ohio natives on the roster, including Kaley Rammelsberg (Westerville), Raina Terry (Marengo), Abby Walker (Cambridge) and Ashley Wenz (Springboro).
