Renting is getting roomier in Columbus, though not by much.
By the numbers: Apartments built in the city between 2014 and 2023 gained 7 square feet when compared to rentals constructed before 2014, per a new RentCafe report.
- Overall, apartments built in that time frame averaged 875 square feet.
Reality check: The change (0.8%) is negligible, about the size of a bedroom closet.
The big picture: Nationwide, newly built apartments got bigger in 2023.
- They were an average of 916 square feet, rebounding from their smallest size in quite some time (889 square feet) the previous year.
Between the lines: Developers are trying to cater to people who want more space while they postpone house purchases or spend time working from home — but packing in more units means more profits amid surging demand.
