Report: WNBA's Rockers could return to Cleveland in 2028

• A formal announcement is expected, SBJ reports, "no later than March."

State of play: Cleveland could once again use the "Rockers" name and play in the newly rechristened Rocket Arena beginning in the 2028 season.

What they're saying: "While we are very optimistic about the competitive WNBA bid that we have submitted, we have not received any confirmation from the league about their finalists," per a statement from Rock Entertainment Group, Gilbert's sports and entertainment holding company.

Catch up quick: The Rockers were one of the WNBA's original eight teams, playing from 1997 to 2003. Owner Gordon Gund folded the franchise after declining attendance and mounting financial losses.

Between the lines: The Cavaliers are currently constructing a training facility co-branded with Cleveland Clinic on the Cuyahoga riverfront.

• The Cavs are expected to move their team operations there while the Rockers could adopt the Cavs' current training facility in suburban Independence.

Zoom out: Surging interest in the WNBA has given league commissioner Cathy Engelbert confidence to pursue expansion beyond the current 12 teams.

• Three additional teams will tip off over the next two years: the Golden State Valkyries in 2025, plus the Toronto Tempo and a Portland team (name TBA) in 2026.
• Philadelphia, Houston, Nashville, Detroit and Miami are all in the running for expansion franchises as well.
