Mariah Carey, Outkast among 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominees

How it works: To be eligible, an artist must have released their first official recording at least 25 years prior to induction.

• A nominating committee of music industry heavyweights creates the ballot based on factors such as musical influence, body of work and innovation, according to the Rock Hall.

The intrigue: This year's ballot features several repeat nominees, including Carey, Lauper, Joy Division/New Order, Oasis, Soundgarden and The White Stripes.

• The other eight are nominated for the first time.

Between the lines: The most surprising name on the ballot is Maná, one of the most successful Mexican bands of all time but certainly not a household name in the United States.

• Chubby Checker, the man behind "The Twist," once held a protest in front of the museum more than 20 years ago over the fact he had yet to be inducted.

What's next: A voting pool of more than 1,000 music historians, journalists and previous inductees will select the final list of inductees, which will be announced in late April.

• Those artists will be honored at a ceremony this fall.
