Group pursuing new Cleveland flag not waiting for formal adoption

Catch up quick: The current Cleveland flag was designed in 1895 by local art student Susan Hepburn.

• For more than a year, the CLE Flag Project has pursued a community-driven makeover to create a more recognizable symbol for civic pride.

By the numbers: More than 11,000 residents from across the city cast votes in a survey released in the fall for one of three finalists created by graphic designers. The existing flag was presented as a fourth option.

• Per the CLE Flag Project, survey takers represented all 17 Cleveland wards as well as nearby suburbs.
• Most Cleveland respondents (73%) answered "yes" when asked if the city should adopt a new flag.
• The eventual chosen design will be the one with the most public support.

State of play: Organizers have partnered with a company to manufacture the flags and with CLE Clothing Co. and GV Art + Design for related merchandise.

• They're also calling on small businesses to partner with them — that is, to receive a free flag to be flown for the unveiling.

Between the lines: Mayor Justin Bibb's administration and Cleveland City Council both support the project, but for the time being they are staying neutral on the question of legislative adoption.

• The CLE Flag Project still intends to pursue formal adoption down the line, but for now it is opting for the People's Flag concept (in the model of Milwaukee) to keep momentum.

The last word: "The People's Flag stands as a testament to the unity, passion, and shared identity of our communities, further showcasing their deep-rooted pride for Cleveland," said Bradford Davy, Bibb's chief of staff, via a spokesperson.
