See the finalists for Cleveland's possible new flag

• The current city flag, adopted in 1895 and designed by art student Susan Hepburn, is presented as a fourth option.

The big picture: CLE Flag Project has sought a makeover in order to create a more recognizable symbol for civic pride.

• The group took inspiration from community-based flag design processes in other cities like Milwaukee.

How it works: Before you vote, you'll be asked to answer a few short questions about your connection to Cleveland.

• Then, instead of picking just one design, you're asked to rate each of the four flags on a scale of 1-10.

Zoom in: All three new designs, selected by a committee of local residents and designers, include symbolism meant to celebrate the city's history and geography.

• Option 1 (top left) includes a six-pointed star to honor Cleveland's historical nickname, "The Sixth City." It features a shape and color scheme paying homage to both the Ohio and U.S. flags.
• Option 2 (top right) includes six-pointed stars arranged to symbolize the tuning pegs on a guitar, with a blue wavy line representing the Cuyahoga River.

• Option 3 (bottom left) includes Green City on a Blue Lake imagery, with a a wave crest pointed to the right, representing the city's forward progress.

💭 Sam's thought bubble: I think I prefer the green ones, but our editor said Option 3 looks like a "Seattle Seahawks credit card," and now I can't unsee it.

What's next: Survey results will be announced in early September.

• CLE Flag Project hopes the winning design will then be formally adopted by city council.
