Millions of people in the Southeast lost power as Hurricane Helene tore through communities from Tallahassee, Florida to Damascus, Virginia, and everywhere in between. Many remain in the dark days later.

The intrigue: The National Weather Service released this view from space that illustrates the trail of darkness left by Helene. The photo above was taken from a NOAA satellite on Saturday, Sept. 28, more than a day after the storm's landfall in Florida.

By the numbers: As of Wednesday night, more than 1 million outages remained across the region. — nearly one week on from making landfall in Florida and flooding southern states with heavy rains. (View the latest here.)

Zoom out: Power is only one of the worries for Helene survivors in Appalachian towns and other hard-hit areas. Survivors struggle to access clean water, a safe shelter, clear roads, gasoline and food, among other necessities.

As of Wednesday morning, more than 160 people have died from the hurricane and its aftermath, and hundreds remain missing, AP reports.
