Kori bustard hatches at Franklin Park Zoo

Zoom in: The chick hatched on Aug. 1, as the result of recommended breeding.

• The kori bustard is listed as "near threatened" — or likely to become endangered in the future — due to slow reproduction rates, hunting and development destroying their habitats, per the National Zoo.

• The chick is being raised by an animal care team to make sure it's getting enough food and exercise.

What they're saying: "In the wild, the chicks follow their parents all
over grasslands and plains, and through the exercise schedule we have established, we are emulating that here," said Bill Robles, a Zoo New England curator.

What's next: When the chick is old enough, it will move to another zoo.
