Minogue wins Mass. GOP governor primary, sets up race against Healey

Mike Minogue will win the Republican primary for Massachusetts governor, the AP projects, setting up a general election matchup with Democratic Gov. Maura Healey in November.

State of play: Minogue is a wealthy former medical device executive. He poured millions of his own money into the race.

Minogue leaned on a lopsided MassGOP convention win earlier this year to justify skipping debates with rival Brian Shortsleeve, a venture capitalist and Marine veteran who ran the MBTA under former Gov. Charlie Baker.

Between the lines: Both candidates campaigned on cutting taxes and ending the state's sanctuary status, but split on some social issues.

Shortsleeve said Minogue's stance on abortion would hurt him with the moderate voters needed to win in the fall.

What's next: Healey, who beat Republican Geoff Diehl in 2022, starts as the strong favorite.

Her campaign has already targeted Minogue's ties to President Trump, who remains deeply unpopular in Massachusetts.
