Boston World Cup funding stalled in legislative standoff

Follow the money: House Democrats recently allocated $10 million in supplemental spending for the games but Senate Democrats aren't on board.

• The host committee is asking for $20 million, the amount negotiated with Gov. Maura Healey.
• They say that's the minimum viable amount for operations, transportation contingencies and fan programming.

Between the lines: House Ways and Means Chair Aaron Michlewitz told the Boston Globe the $10 million from his chamber is a "starting marker" and left room to increase the funding when the state's fiscal situation improves.

• Senate Ways and Means Chair Michael Rodrigues said his chamber already approved $5 million for transit infrastructure, though FIFA says that's a different project.
• Asked Monday if she's confident the Legislature will sign off on the funding, Healey said, "I sure hope so."

Meanwhile, President Trump has threatened to move the matches out of Massachusetts over public safety concerns.

The bottom line: Seven matches are scheduled at Gillette Stadium from June through July next year, and the host committee is waiting to hear from Massachusetts leaders on what will get funded.
