Dip your toes into art collecting at the Affordable Art Fair

For all the Basquiats and Warhols out of reach, an art event coming to Boston promises high-end pieces for a much lower price.

The intrigue: The Affordable Art Fair, which began in 1999 in the UK, connects wannabe collectors to contemporary artists with works ranging from $300 to $10,000.

State of play: The fair runs Thursday through Saturday at the SoWa Power Station and has pieces from more than 50 galleries.

Some hail from Boston like Blue Triangle Gallery in Chinatown and Bromfield in the South End, while others are visiting from Tokyo, London and The Hague.

Be smart: The fair is designed to help locals with some disposable income dip their toes into art collecting — while paying artists fair rates for their work.

Don't be that guy who complains about the price tags on portraits that painters spent hours upon hours perfecting.

What they're saying: "The core mission of the fair globally is to make collecting art accessible and welcoming and inviting," says Erin Schuppert, the New York Fair director, who worked on bringing this to Boston.

5-9pm Thursday, 12-9pm Friday, 10am-8pm Saturday and 10am-5pm Sunday.
