Mass. folk artist brings 'red roots Americana' to Cambridge festival

Why it matters: The celebration showcases Massachusetts indigenous singers, performers and community members in a state that has shifted away from Columbus Day in recent years to observe the history of indigenous communities.

State of play: The Cambridge venue's second Indigenous People's Month Celebration starts at 8pm.

• Joining Hopkins in the lineup are Alaskan singer Kim Moberg, who curated the celebration, and the Wampanoag Nations Singers and Dancers, accompanied by a water drum and rattles.
• The Wampanoag Nations performers are part of the tribal communities of Mashpee and Herring Pond on Cape Cod, and Aquinnah on Martha's Vineyard.

Zoom in: Hopkins spent the last two years as an "Indigenous Voices of The Northeast" artist resident, funded by the New York Stage and Film Fund, for her play, "An American Ghost Dance."

• She's working on her next album, which is set to release early next year.
• She plans to include songs discussing military conflict and immigration. Another song, called "Red Wing," pays tribute to indigenous actress Lillian St. Cyr.
