Michelin adds Boston, Philadelphia to Northeast Cities Guide

Driving the news: The Boston area and Philadelphia will be part of the Michelin Guide Northeast Cities edition, joining New York City and Washington, D.C.

• Michelin partnered with MeetBoston and the Cambridge Office of Tourism to add Boston.

What they're saying: "We are thrilled for Boston and Philadelphia to join the Michelin Guide Northeast Cities as both are premier destinations for gourmets to experience a rich diversity of cuisine and culinary history," said Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guide, in a statement.

Zoom in: Like in any Michelin city, anonymous inspectors will visit local restaurants throughout the year and determine which spots get stars.

• They factor in the quality of products, "harmony of flavors," mastery of cooking, the chef's personality reflected in the food and consistency across the menu and each visit.
