Boston Mayor Wu takes on Trump, not Kraft, in annual address

• Wu called the White House "a federal administration that's attacking our sources of strength," to describe how the Trump appointees are coming at liberal Massachusetts, and Boston in particular, on everything from immigration to education, free speech and research funding.

What she's saying: "No one tells Boston how to take care of our own. Not kings, and not presidents who think they are kings. Boston was born facing down bullies," Wu said at the top of her speech.

What's new: There were a few new policies sprinkled throughout the speech:

• A new business recruitment office to fill vacant commercial office space.
• An anti-displacement plan to protect housing and a pilot program to offer 0% interest loans for multi-family homes.
• New funding for home energy improvements.
• Expanding free access to local historical sights for students.

The bottom line: It looks like Wu's message this campaign season will be more about Boston's liberal values in the national spotlight and less about Kraft's criticism of her administration.

• Her closing words, meant to bolster Boston and send a warning to Trump: "God bless our City, God bless our people and God save whoever messes with Boston."
