The highest-paid state employees in Massachusetts all work for the University of Massachusetts, according to state payroll data.
Why it matters: UMass pays out big bucks to offer competitive salaries for sports coaches, administrators and medical school leaders.
- UMass head basketball coach Francisco Martin made $1.83 million last year.
The highest-paid state employee not affiliated with the UMass system was State Police detectives captain Thomas McCarthy at $224,007 base pay and $349,815 in overtime.
- The next non-UMass employee on the list, MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng, made $546,684 last year.
