Axios Boston's Mike Deehan recently traveled from Boston's South Station to Washington D.C. on Amtrak to check out the East Coast's major train hubs.
New York City's Moynihan Train Hall at Penn Station is the gorgeous gem of the Acela corridor, a $1.6-billion hub of travel and dining that's a destination even without train tickets.
Where to eat: There are too many eateries to list in the Food Hall at Moynihan, but the Alidoro sandwich counter stands out.
- Plus, the hall is dominated by the central wrap-around Irish Exit bar that has plenty of seats and fast service.
Where to work: The food hall's ample seating also provides plenty of desk space and power outlets. The strong public Wi-Fi makes work a breeze until it's time to board.
Where to wait: This is where Moynihan falters a little. Outside of the lovely food hall, there's almost nowhere to sit in the station.
- You'll see lots of travelers sitting on their luggage.
- Long lines form to get down the stairs to the train platforms. New Yorkers love queues.
Where to wee: The bathrooms were clean, large and, for once, actually up to airport standards.
