Karen Read interviews with Boston Magazine under scrutiny

• Unlike other states, Massachusetts does not have a shield law that protects a journalist's sources.

Zoom in: Prosecutors are asking Superior Court Judge Beverly Cannone for unredacted audio recordings, off-the-record notes and messages between Read and reporter Gretchen Voss leading up to her 2023 story about Read in Boston Magazine.

• Voss conducted three interviews with Read, the last of which wasn't recorded, per MassLive. 
• They argue that any promises that off-the-record comments would stay confidential have "no legal import," per the Boston Globe. 

State of play: Prosecutors said the magazine handed over two redacted recordings involving Read, her attorney and Voss from June and July 2023, the Globe reported.

• They pointed to a recording where Read says she was "drinking a vodka every 40 minutes" the night of Boston Police officer John O'Keefe's death, followed by a redaction.

• Prosecutors argue that's inconsistent with Read's 20/20 interview where she said she had "probably about four" drinks and didn't finish them. 
• During Read's trial, a State Police investigator said video footage showed Read having nine drinks at two bars over roughly three hours prior to O'Keefe's death, per the Globe. 

What we're watching: Whether the judge forces Voss to turn over off-the-record material and what, if anything, prosecutors learn about O'Keefe's death in the process.
