Group that reps Google, Facebook slams privacy proposal

A trade group representing Google, Facebook and other major internet companies is out with a statement slamming a new House bill that would apply the same strict rules governing the use of customer data to both internet providers and web companies. From the Internet Association's spokesman Noah Theran, who also said the industry was already well-regulated:

"This bill has the potential to upend the consumer experience online and stifle innovation."

Why it matters: It's not entirely clear that this bill is going anywhere. But it's telling that a group representing the biggest digital ad players is pushing back on it and indicates that if the idea did get any traction, it would be met with resistance.
