President Biden will nominate Cindy McCain to serve as U.S. representative to the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture, the White House announced Wednesday.

Why it matters: The move reflects Biden's emphasis on bipartisanship, according to the New York Times. McCain, the widow of the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), is a longtime Trump critic and one of Biden's Republican allies.

  • McCain endorsed Biden last year and was later censured by the Arizona GOP.
  • She is the chair and director of the Hensley Beverage Company and serves as a member of the Human Trafficking Council at the McCain Institute for International Leadership at Arizona State University.
  • The White House announced a slate of 17 nominations, including Democrat Claire Cronin, the current majority leader in the Massachusetts House, for ambassador to Ireland.

Top White House officials heading to Senate for infrastructure talks

White House officials are heading to Capitol Hill Tuesday for a briefing on the status and details of the $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure proposal — another sign that President Biden is serious about finding a compromise with Republican senators.

Driving the news: Biden's core negotiating team — including Louisa Terrell, the White House’s legislative affairs director, Steve Ricchetti, counselor to the president and Brian Deese, director of the National Economic Council — are scheduled to meet with senators, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Biden recalls how the late GOP Sen. John Warner "forged consensus"

"In the battle for the soul of America today, John Warner is a reminder of what we can do when we come together as one nation," President Biden said in remarks Wednesday at the funeral of former GOP Sen. John Warner, who endorsed Biden during the 2020 election.

The big picture: Biden has long been an advocate of bipartisanship and forging consensus in the U.S. Senate, which has been at the center of debate in recent weeks due to the Republican filibusters of a Jan. 6 commission and a sweeping voting rights bill spearheaded by Democrats.

Why it's so hard to tax wealth

Illustration: Sarah Grillo/Axios

The wealth tax that wasn't a wealth tax isn't even a tax, now. The Democrats had a meticulously constructed 107-page proposal to pay for a large chunk of their spending plans with a tax on billionaires, but it died ignobly on Wednesday, the same day it was unveiled.

Why it matters: The dream of a wealth tax will never die as it so neatly generates revenue by reducing inequality. But there are three main reasons why that dream is likely to remain just a dream for the foreseeable future.
