Election results will roll in at different times tonight and into tomorrow as key races unfold across the country.
Why it matters: Tuesday night's elections are expected to be a referendum on President Trump's first few months in office and a potential sign of what's to come in the 2026 midterms.
State of play: Tonight brings a mix of state and local elections, with voters casting ballots in races for governors, mayors and other offices, plus a key statewide referendum.
- Four areas — Virginia, New Jersey, New York City and California — have key races to watch.
- Trump and Republican operatives have zeroed in on tonight's races as polls have consistently shown Republican gubernatorial candidates trailing.
Zoom in: Many eyes will be on New York City specifically for the race between front-runner Zohran Mamdani, Trump-backed Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.
- Virginia, meanwhile, is set to elect the state's first-ever female governor.
Reality check: Many races will see results quickly. But if a race is close, it might take several hours or days for an official winner to be declared.
Here's when elections results are expected and when we might know who won.
Virginia election results
Virginia had one of the most chaotic, lengthy and expensive election cycles in the state's history.
- Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears and former Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger are battling to become the state's first female governor.
- Democrat Ghazala Hashmi and Republican John Reid will contend for lieutenant governor.
- Trump's political operation bankrolled a voter turnout effort in Virginia as a way to test tactics for the midterms, Axios previously reported.
Polls close at 7pm.
- In the 2020 election, the AP first reported results at 7:03pm ET. Roughly 71% of the vote was counted by midnight.
New Jersey governor results
New Jersey will see a hotly-contested governor's race between Democratic U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill and Republican Jack Ciattarelli
- Trump held a tele-rally for Ciattarelli during early voting.
- Despite Trump's support, Ciattarelli has broken from the president on several policy issues, including the claim that using Tylenol during pregnancy is linked to childhood autism.
Polls close at 8pm ET.
- In 2020, the AP first reported results at 8:18pm ET. By midnight, about 32% of total votes were reported.
NYC mayor election: Cuomo vs Mamdani
New York City's election features one of the biggest races of the night, with Cuomo, Sliwa and Mamdani all vying to be mayor of the Big Apple.
- On Monday night, Trump backed Cuomo, despite the two clashing throughout the COVID pandemic, saying on Truth Social that a vote for Sliwa, the Republican in the race, "is a vote for Mamdani."
- The president also said on Truth Social it was "highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required," to New York City if Mamdani, a democratic socialist, becomes mayor.
Of note: Mamdani is ahead of Cuomo in recent opinion polls.
Polls close at 9pm ET.
- Results should come in from the city quickly. However, a declared winner might take days if it's a tight race.
- 90% of votes were counted as of 10:30pm in the June primary race between Mamdani and Cuomo.
California Prop 50 results
There's plenty of attention on California's election tonight over Gov. Gavin Newsom's push to redraw the congressional maps — a hot button issue nationwide sparked by President Trump over the last year.
- The fight over Proposition 50 was one of the most expensive ballot battles in state history.
- If it passes, the state legislature could redraw the state's congressional map for the 2026, 2028 and 2030 elections — and could shift Republican-held seats into Democratic-leaning districts.
- High-profile figures like former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy have opposed the plan.
Polls close at 11pm ET.
- California first reported votes at around 11:06pm ET in the 2024 election, with half of its votes reported by 1am, per CNN.
- 90% of the vote wasn't in until nine days later, CNN reports.
