UCLA's treatment of Jewish students violates civil rights law, DOJ says

Driving the news: The DOJ's civil rights division found that UCLA violated the 14th Amendment's Equal Protection Clause and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 "by acting with deliberate indifference in creating a hostile educational environment for Jewish and Israeli students," per a press release.

• The university is accused of failing to adequately respond to complaints of harassment and abuse that Jewish and Israeli students faced on campus after the October 7 attack.

What they're saying: Attorney General Pamela Bondi said in a statement that an investigation into the University of California system found "concerning evidence of systemic anti-Semitism at UCLA that demands severe accountability from the institution."

• She added, "This disgusting breach of civil rights against students will not stand: DOJ will force UCLA to pay a heavy price for putting Jewish Americans at risk and continue our ongoing investigations into other campuses in the UC system."
• UCLA did not immediately respond to Axios' request for comment.
