A manhunt is underway in Minnesota for the suspect in the shooting attacks of two state lawmakers at their Twin Cities homes that Gov. Tim Walz (D) called a "politically motivated assassination."
The latest: Police arrested a suspect in the shootings that killed Minnesota state House Democratic leader Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, and wounded state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, on Sunday evening.
The big picture: More than 100 law enforcement officials spent Sunday afternoon searching rural Sibley County, near the Green Isle home of the suspect, whom police identified as 57-year-old Vance Luther Boelter, Axios' Nick Halter reports.
- Walz said Sunday night that 60-year-old Minnesota Senate Human Services Committee Chair Hoffman had completed his final surgery and was moving toward a "recovery that is healing" from his gunshot wounds.
- A GoFundMe page set up for the Hoffmans' recovery on Sunday had raised over $94,000 as of Sunday night.
State of play: "Minnesota's flags will fly at half staff in honor and remembrance of Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman," Walz wrote in posts to his social media accounts.
- The 55-year-old Hortman had served as state House speaker from 2019 until this year, when she became House Democrats' caucus leader following a rare tie in the chamber.
- "She woke up every morning determined to make Minnesota a better place, and she will be greatly missed," Walz said.
What happened: Police said they responded about 2am CT Saturday to a report of a shooting at Hoffman's home in Champlin, about 22 miles north of downtown Minneapolis.
- Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley said at a Saturday briefing that around 3:35am CT, officers proactively checked on Hortman at her home some five miles away.
- When they arrived, they encountered a person dressed like a police officer.
- Police exchanged gunfire with the suspect at Hortman's Brooklyn Park home, but Bruley said he escaped.
Zoom in: Attorney General Pam Bondi said Saturday the FBI is investigating the case alongside state and local officials.
- The FBI offered a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect.
- The suspect abandoned at Hortman's home an SUV that was similar to a police squad vehicle, investigators said.
- In it, they found a manifesto featuring a target list that included other Democratic lawmakers and prominent individuals who support abortion rights in Minnesota, Axios' Torey Van Oot, Nick Halter and Kyle Stokes report.
- There were allegedly dozens of names on the list. The office of Sen. Tina Smith (D-Minn.) confirmed her name was among those on it.
Zoom out: Boelter was appointed by both Walz and former Gov. Mark Dayton to a state Workforce Development Board that has several dozen members and served for a time alongside Hoffman, Van Oot reported.
- Drew Evans, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension superintendent, said that there appeared to be some overlap in public meetings between the two, but it was unclear if they knew one another.
What they're saying: Bondi said in a statement, "This horrific violence will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."
- The entire Minnesota delegation joined together in a bipartisan statement to "speak with one voice to express our outrage, grief, and condemnation of this horrible attack on public servants."
- Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) on CNN Sunday remembered Hortman as "a person that did everything for the right reasons."
