Germany warns its travelers of tougher U.S. immigration enforcement

Driving the news: Germany's Foreign Office updated its travel advisory for the U.S. on Tuesday, noting that visas and entry waivers don't guarantee entry for German citizens.

• "The final decision regarding entry is made by the US border official," the website states.
• Having a criminal record in the U.S., providing false information about the purpose of a trip or overstaying a visa upon entry or exit can lead to arrest, detention and deportation, the agency warned.
• The Foreign Office did not immediately respond to Axios' request for comment.

Germany earlier this month issued a travel advisory warning transgender and nonbinary people planning to travel to the U.S of difficulties entering the country after Trump issued an executive order saying the federal government recognizes only two sexes.

Zoom in: The recent advisory comes in response to Germans recently being detained or deported in or entering the U.S., a foreign ministry spokesperson told local outlet Spiegel.

• In one incident, a 25-year-old reported being arrested at the U.S.-Mexico border and being taken to a deportation center wearing a chain around his stomach, along with handcuffs and leg irons.

• Another German living in the U.S. reported being arrested in Boston, where he was held in a detention center for more than a week.

Zoom out: Travelers from Canada and Wales have also reported such incidents, though the two don't currently have travel advisories for the U.S.
