Oversight Dems want Jack Smith's report on Trump's classified documents case

The big picture: In a letter to Garland Thursday, Oversight Democrats requested a private review of the classified documents portion of the report.

• The letter asserted the committee's jurisdiction over National Archives and Records Administration, which handles presidential records, as a basis for the request.
• The letter asked that the relevant portion of the report be made available no later than Jan. 15.

Zoom out: Trump was indicted in June 2023 as part of Smith's investigation into his handling of classified documents after leaving the White House.

• Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed the case last July after ruling that Smith had been unconstitutionally appointed.
• Smith had appealed that decision but ultimately dropped it after Trump's victory.
• He subsequently filed a motion to drop Trump as a co-defendant in the case.
