Scoop: Sherrod Brown's magic number in Ohio Senate race

With his eight-point benchmark, Brown is supplying the number all of Washington is wondering about.

• It's a pretty basic math formula: Determine Trump's margin of victory and then solve down ballot.
• If Trump wins by more than 8 points, Brown is probably toast.
• If Harris keeps it to the 6-8 point range, Brown likes his odds.

Zoom out: The 2024 cycle, so far, has been defined by Senate Democrats running well ahead of their presidential candidate and Republican candidates running behind Trump.

• But as election day nears, political gravity is exerting a stronger pull, making it more difficult for candidates of either party to separate themselves from the top of the ticket.

• It's a reality that Sen. Jon Tester (D) is also confronting in Montana, where Trump is expected to win by double digits.
• Ditto former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R), who is trying to create his own separation from Trump in Maryland.

The bottom line: Ohio has been slipping away from Democrats at the presidential level.

• But Senate Democrats remain optimistic that if any candidate can keep the seat, his name would be Brown.
