Trump signals SALT deduction cap reversal

Context: Senate Republicans supported the 2017 tax cuts that created a $10,000 SALT deduction cap.

• This state and local tax deduction cap hit upper-middle class earners hard in higher-tax states, per Axios' Juliegrace Brufke.

What they're saying: "I will turn it around, get SALT back, lower your Taxes, and so much more," Trump wrote.

• "I'll work with the Democrat Governor and Mayor, and make sure the funding is there to bring New York State back to levels it hasn't seen for 50 years," added the Republican presidential nominee ahead of his Wednesday rally in Long Island, N.Y.
• When asked to elaborate on the GOP nominee's pledge and what changed his mind on the apparent policy shift, Trump campaign national press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the former president "is seeing America's working men and women getting crushed" by Vice President Kamala Harris' "out of control" inflationary policies.
• "While his pro-growth, pro-energy policies will make life affordable again, President Trump is also going to quickly move tax relief for working people and Seniors," Leavitt added.

The other side: Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) told reporters Tuesday he'd "always been for eliminating the cap on SALT," which he called "a nasty piece of legislation" that he said was aimed at blue states.

• "Trump was the one who took away SALT. It hurt many New Yorkers, including lots on Long Island," Schumer said. "Now that he's going back to Long Island for the first time he changes his mind? Give me a break."
• Representatives for Harris did not immediately respond to Axios' request for comment.
