Trump shooting task force seeks briefing on new assassination attempt

The leaders of a bipartisan congressional task force investigating the July 13 assassination attempt against former President Trump are seeking a briefing into the latest apparent attempt on the ex-president's life.

Why it matters: Sunday's shooting at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, is likely to intensify lawmakers' scrutiny of the Secret Service.

What they're saying: "The Task Force is monitoring this attempted assassination of former President Trump in West Palm Beach this afternoon," Reps. Mike Kelly (R-Pa.) and Jason Crow (D-Colo.), the chair and ranking member of the task force, said in a statement.

"We have requested a briefing with the U.S. Secret Service about what happened and how security responded," the lawmakers said.
Kelly and Crow added that they are "thankful that the former President was not harmed," but "remain deeply concerned about political violence and condemn it in all of its forms."

The latest: The Trump campaign said in a statement that the former president is safe following "gunshots in his vicinity," Axios' Erin Doherty reported.

Secret Service opened fire on the gunman and a "potential suspect" is in custody, Secret Service spokesperson Rafael Barros said during a news conference.
The FBI said it is investigating "what appears to be an attempted assassination" against Trump.
