"We live in danger times": Secret Service after Trump apparent assassination attempt

Driving the news: Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said at the press briefing that because Trump is not a sitting president, the Secret Service was "limited" to "the areas that the Secret Service deems possible."

• "The golf course is surrounded by shrubbery, so when somebody gets into the shrubbery, they're pretty much out of sight," Bradshaw said.
• "If he was [the sitting president], we would have had this entire golf course surrounded," Bradshaw said.
• He added that the "Secret Service did exactly what they should have done."

Catch up quick: The Trump campaign said in a statement earlier on Sunday that the former president is "safe" following "gunshots in his vicinity."

• Rafael Barros, the special agent in charge for the Secret Service, Miami field office, said during the news conference that "Secret Service personnel opened fire on a gunman located near the property line."
• A "potential suspect" is in custody, but has not publicly been identified.

What they're saying: "The threat level is high," Barros said during the Sunday news conference.

Zoom out: The Secret Service came under intense scrutiny following the July assassination attempt against Trump during a Pennsylvania rally.

• A gunman opened fire at the rally, killing one person and wounding the former president and two others.
• Kimberly Cheatle, who was the head of the Secret Service during the June assassination attempt of the former president, resigned in July after facing bipartisan calls to step down after the shooting.
