House votes to form task force to investigate Trump rally shooting

The House will create a bipartisan task force to investigate the assassination attempt on former President Trump after Congress members unanimously voted in favor of the action on Wednesday night.

The big picture: The House panel will have subpoena power and comprise seven Republicans and six Democrats.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) announced plans earlier this week for the task force to investigate the July 13 Butler, Pennsylvania, shooting that killed one spectator and wounded three others, including Trump.
Leaders on both sides of the aisle said they want a swift, nonpartisan probe into the matter, with both sides expressing grave concerns over the security failures, per Axios' Juliegrace Brufke.

What to expect: The panel will investigate all actions by agencies and officials at local, state and federal levels related to the shooting, per text of the resolution that passed 416-0.

It will issue a final report of its findings by Dec. 13, "including any recommendations for legislative reforms necessary to prevent future security lapses."

What's next: Johnson told CNN Wednesday panel members would be announced a day later.
