Trump and Harris voters have a big confidence gap in electoral system: poll

Driving the news: CNN polling released earlier this month found two-thirds or more of likely voters in six battleground states — Arizona, Michigan, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Nevada and Wisconsin — were at least somewhat confident their votes would be cast and counted correctly.

• Wisconsin was the only state where a majority of likely voters said they were very confident their votes would be recorded accurately.
• Yet the results displayed a large confidence gap between voters likely to vote for Harris compared to those likely to vote for Trump.

Zoom in: An average of 71% of Harris supporters across the six states are very confident in their state's electoral process, while an average of only 15% of Trump supporters said the same.

• For Trump supporters who said they're at least somewhat confident their votes will be accurately counted, results ranged from 44% in Michigan to 61% in Georgia.

Between the lines: Mail-in voting has become more popular since the pandemic, but Trump spent years disparaging early voting as "corrupt."

• The GOP's slowness to embrace mail-in voting allowed Democrats to build out a large mail-in voting advantage in swing states.

The big picture: During his presidential debate against Harris this week, Trump continued to deny he lost the 2020 election and declined to express any regret for his actions on Jan. 6, 2021.

• Despite being indicted twice over his efforts to overturn the 2020 election, Trump has refused to commit to accepting the results of the 2024 race.
• In fact, earlier this month he told Fox News that he had "every right" to interfere with the 2020 election results.
