Virginia man arrested for threatening to kill Vice President Harris

• The threats have coincided with the public increasingly fearing political and election-related violence.
• The assassination attempt against former President Trump heightened those concerns, though investigators have not determined a motive for the shooting.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Virginia said on Monday that the man, Frank Lucio Carillo, 66, was arrested last week on federal charges.

• Authorities said an account linked to Carillo on the social media platform GETTR made over 4,300 posts and replies containing threats against Harris, President Biden, FBI Director Christopher Wray and other officials.
• They were able to link the account to Carillo and determine his physical location using GETTR subscriber information and other investigative methods.

Zoom in: In a post from late July, the account linked to Carillo posted, "Kamala Harris needs to be put on fire alive I will do it personally if no one else does it I want her to suffer a slow agonizing death," according to the affidavit supporting his arrest.

• In February, it posted, "AR-15 LOCKED AND LOADED."

• FBI officials seized a 9 mm pistol, an AR-15 rifle and thousands of rounds of ammunition when they executed a search warrant on his home on Aug. 2, according to the Justice Department.

What they're saying: Christopher Kavanaugh, the U.S. attorney for the Western District of Virginia, said in a statement that "political discourse is a cornerstone of our American experience. We can disagree. We can argue and we can debate."

• "However, when those disagreements cross the line to threats of violence, law enforcement must step in," he said.
