FDA warns of "elevated" levels of lead in ground cinnamon

The Food and Drug Administration is warning that more ground cinnamon products contain "elevated levels of lead" that may be unsafe.

Why it matters: The federal agency is advising consumers to "stop using and dispose of" the recalled ground cinnamon products.

It's the FDA's third public health alert about ground cinnamon this year.

Threat level: Consuming products could contribute to elevated levels of lead in the blood, the FDA said, noting long-term exposure could contribute to "adverse health effects."

Children are more vulnerable to lead poisoning than adults because their bodies still developing, according to the CDC.

Flashback: Last fall, WanaBana issued a voluntary recall of applesauce pouches linked to lead poisoning symptoms in children.

The FDA issued cinnamon alerts in March and July 25.

The big picture: The FDA has recommended manufacturers recall all the affected products.

Brands and products are included in the FDA alert, which contains the lots, codes and best-by dates.

What's next: The FDA said the health alert could be updated with additional products as it continues to "analyze cinnamon and review sample results received from state partners."
