"Inside Out 2" overtakes "Frozen 2" as highest-grossing animated film

"Inside Out 2" is now the highest-grossing animated film of all time globally, Disney announced Wednesday, breaking a record held by "Frozen 2" since 2020.

Why it matters: Theaters need broad-appeal blockbusters to draw audiences back after the pandemic and explosion of streaming services disrupted viewing habits.

And without many strong challengers to its success this year, it appears that 2024 will be the second year in a row that a film with a female protagonist takes the box office crown.

Driving the news: The Pixar Animation Studios film has made $1.46 billion worldwide, according to Disney.

"Frozen 2" grossed about $1.45 billion following its November 2019 release.

The big picture: Earlier this month, "Inside Out 2" crossed $1 billion in worldwide box office sales, making it the first and only film of the year to reach the milestone.

It's also the fastest animated picture to gross $1 billion — reaching the marker in 19 days, according to Disney, compared to 25 days for "Frozen 2."
Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios now have seven of the 10 highest-grossing animated films in history.
