"Inside Out 2" unseats "Dune 2" as biggest movie of the year

Panic and anxiety have proved to be more relatable themes than riding giant sand invertebrates, if movie attendance is any indication.
Zoom in: "Inside Out 2," the Disney and Pixar sequel to the 2015 animated hit, pulled in $100 million at the domestic box office in its second weekend, toppling "Dune 2" as the highest-grossing film so far this year.
The summer box office has been off to a slow start after last year's dual Hollywood strikes delayed expected hits, including "Snow White" and "Blade," both of which had been planned for release this year.
What we're watching: "Inside Out 2" is now on track to become the first movie this year to surpass $1 billion worldwide.
- And if this weekend's box office rankings hold come year-end, then 2024 will be the second year in a row that a film with a female protagonist generates the highest-gross.
