Usha Vance will likely see her profile rise dramatically now that former President Trump has chosen her husband, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), as his 2024 running mate.
Why it matters: Usha Vance — a highly accomplished attorney and daughter of Indian immigrants — and her husband bring youth and diversity to the Trump ticket.
Usha Vance's background
Usha Vance, née Chilukuri, was raised in San Diego, Calif., the New York Times reported.
- She met J.D. Vance when they were both students at Yale Law School. The pair married in 2014 and have three children together.
- Prior to law school, Usha Vance got a bachelor's degree in history from Yale and a master of philosophy degree from the University of Cambridge.
- She was a registered Democrat until at least 2014, per the Times.
Where does she work?
The latest: Shortly after Trump selected her husband as his running mate, Usha Vance announced Monday that she was leaving her law firm job.
- "In light of today's news, I have resigned from my position at Munger, Tolles & Olson to focus on caring for our family," she said in a statement, Bloomberg Law reported.
The big picture: After graduating from law school, Usha Vance completed a number of clerkships, including for Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts.
- She has also clerked at the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky and for Justice Brett Kavanaugh when he was on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.
- From 2015 to 2017, Vance worked at the California law firm Munger, Tolles & Olson, which describes its work culture as "radically progressive."
- She returned to the company in 2019 and worked on "complex civil litigation," according to her company profile, which was removed from the company's website after she left the firm.
- She worked on cases defending the University of California against allegations that it violated Title IX and defending the Walt Disney Company against claims of copyright infringement, the Times reported.
Views on her husband's political future
J.D. Vance told Fox News in June that he would be disappointed if Trump didn't pick him to be his running mate.
- However, Usha Vance said the couple is "open" to whatever happens.
- "I'm not raring to change anything about our lives right now," she added.
